Born and raised in Oujda, Morocco, Chef Mourad Jamal grew up with a love for fresh seafood and the desire to share it with others. At 12 years old he was cooking dinner for the family, and by age 15 he was working in restaurants, eventually attending culinary school. Growing up, “Sardines were the common, affordable fish” that Jamal favored. His primary training was in Morocco, but his passion to expand his knowledge and skills took him to France for a year where he mastered Classic French and Mediterranean cuisine techniques.
After graduating with a Bachelor’s in Food and Tourism Management, Walt Disney World in Orlando hired Jamal as an International Chef at the prestigious four-star restaurant, Jiko’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. From there, he moved to Indianapolis to help Chef Jake Brenchley re-open the Scholars Inn Gourmet Café which soon became the “Best New Restaurant” and “Best Upscale Restaurant” in town. Tired of the cold weather, he headed west to California, first working under Justin Hoen at Epazote, and then quickly earning the position of Executive Chef at Sunset Bar and Grill.
Today you will find him working with his team in the Poseidon Restaurant, creating delicious dishes that everyone loves. One of his favorite fish is Chilean Seabass, “because it’s sustainable, available all year, delicious, flavorful and easy to cook.” Chef Jamal is proud to work with Santa Monica Seafood; he’s “always had great experiences with the company,” and appreciates what we do “to make sure clients get the best seafood possible.”
